Mike Scott - Mike Scott Orchard
Mike Scott Orchard
Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji
Raised in the family apple orchard business and armed with a knowledge of horticulture, Mike knew he wanted to put down permanent roots in Wenatchee, Washington. At first, Mike followed in his family’s footsteps, tending the orchards and cultivating apples. Eventually, Mike began converting some of his apple orchards to wine grape vineyards.
In the late 1960s Mike travelled to Europe and learned about high-density orchard planting - a technique that is widely used by orchardists today but was generally unheard of in Washington at the time. Mike was able to utilize this technique before other growers at the time, while still keeping his production on a smaller scale.
When asked about the best part of being a Washington apple grower, Mike immediately answered, "The Washington Apple brand!" Mike says the efforts of the pioneers of the Washington Apple Commission in the 1950s and 1960s helped put Washington apples on the map, and now the Washington Red Delicious is an apple known around the world.
Mike has two sons in the agricultural industry: Tim is a production manager for Zirkle Fruit Company, a grower of apples, pears, cherries, and stone fruit in Selah, WA and his son Chris, a former employee of the Washington Apple Commission, is the general manager for Quincy Foods - a company that processes corn, peas, lima beans, and other products in Quincy, WA. Mike and his wife Judi run their winery together. To learn more about Mike's orchards, vineyard, and winery, visit their website at:
